HOME REMEDIES FOR DOGS

As with any kind of remedy, home remedies for your pet should not just be a verbal treatment. So, you need to possess the right knowledge regarding the quality and dosage of the medicine before giving it to your dog. Also, you should know that any medicine that works for you may not work for a canine. Also, you should know that I am not a vet, but these remedies have worked for me in the past.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Every home with dogs should have apple cider vinegar (ACV). It's a remedy with multiple uses for dogs: alleviating allergies, arthritis, establishing correct pH balance. You can also give apple cider vinegar to cats and horses.

If your dog incessantly licks its feet, has itchy skin, smelly ears, or the beginnings of a hot spot, put ACV into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on. Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you from having to shave the dog. If the skin is already broken, dilute the ACV with an equal amount of water and spray on.

Fleas, flies, ticks and bacteria, external parasites, ring worm, fungus, mange, etc., are unlikely to inhabit a dog whose system is acidic inside and out. Should you ever experience any of these with your dog, bathe with a nice gentle herbal shampoo -- one that you would use on your own hair -- rinse thoroughly, and then sponge onACV diluted with equal amounts of warm water. Allow your dog to drip dry.

Does your dog have a UTI?  Use a yogurt and apple cider vinegar supplement for canine bladder infections:  Yogurt and 1 Tbsp. of ACV. One time a day.

Remedies For Fleas
Dawn:
Bathe pets in a mixture of warm water and DAWN Lemon Scented Liquid Soap.  DAWN Lemon Scented Liquid Soap is a great flea killer and repellent.

Apple Cider Vinegar:
Fleas, flies, ticks and bacteria, external parasites, ring worm, fungus, staphylococcus, streptococcus, mange, etc., are unlikely to inhabit a dog whose system is acidic inside and out. Should you ever experience any of these with your dog, bathe with a nice gentle herbal shampoo -- one that you would use on your own hair -- rinse thoroughly, and then sponge on ACV diluted with equal amounts of warm water. Allow your dog to drip dry.

The Light Test:
If you believe fleas have invaded your home, assess the damage by adding a few drops of dish detergent to a plate filled with water. Situate the plate on the floor close to a lamp. Attracted to the light, fleas will jump into the plate and drown.

Diatomaceous Earth:
Often used as a filtration aid in swimming pool systems, diatomaceous earth (fossilized remains of sea creatures) has a reputation for controlling pests. Sprinkle UNREFINED diatomaceous earth over your yard to keep fleas at a distance from your pets. In the home, you can sprinkle under furniture, as well as in wall cracks and crevices.

Cedar Wood:
Cedar Wood (chips) placed in the corners of rooms, under furniture and under a pets bedding keeps fleas away. The Cedar Chips placed next to a home or apartments, the doors, etc, also acts as a barrier to keep fleas out.

Avon Sink So Soft:
Avon SKIN SO SOFT Bath Oil Spray has been proven as a great product to keep fleas away and to stop them from biting. Just bathe your dog with Skin So Soft!

Vomiting Or Diarrhea

Dogs that are vomiting or have diarrhea should fast for a minimum of 12 to 24 hours. Puppies should not fast for more than 12 hours - usually the whole night will suffice.  The fast will consist of no food or treats. Water may further upset a vomiting dog, so ice chips may be a good alternative until the dog feels better.

After the 12-24 hour fast offer a bland diet composed of boiled rice and chicken or boiled rice. Make sure the skin is taken off the chicken. Make sure the rice is the bulky part of the meal. Offer this in 3-4 small meals throughout the day.
Add a dollop of plain yogurt or cottage cheese to allow some good bacteria to help out the inflamed intestines.

You need to make sure your dog is not becoming dehydrated. Gently lift the skin on the back between the shoulder blades. If it snaps back into position, good. If it delays or stays lifted, the dog may need subcutaneous fluids from the vet.

If the dog is having frequent liquid squirts of diarrhea, the odds of becoming dehydrated are great. You may help by giving some unflavored Pedialyte, or mix some Gatorade into his water bowl. If the dog is vomiting persistently, offering water may further cause vomiting, making the situation worse. You can try to freeze some Gatorade or Pedialyte, and offer it to let your dog lick it.  However, in severe cases, the only way to keep the dog hydrated is through fluids provided by the vet.

Check the dog's gums. Have him seen by a vet immediatelyif his gums turn pale, whitish, grayish or purple. Normal gums should be a healthy, bubble gum pink. Try as well to press your finger on his gum. The gum should become whitish and promptly return pink. If it takes a few seconds, again, the dog needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.

Pumpkin For Diarrhea, Constipation
It's quite remarkable how fresh pumpkin (cooked and mashed or 100% natural canned and pureed - NOT pie filling-) can work wonders for both the occasional bout of diarrhea, or for the opposite, constipation in dogs. It has been reported that it firms up a dog's loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. How much pumpkin should you give it? It depends on the size of the dog, but as a rule of thumb, a couple of teaspoons daily for a small dog or a couple of tablespoons for a large dog. You may have to disguise it in your dog's favorite food.

Nutri-Cal:
You can also buy a tube of Nutri-Cal from the pet store.  It is a toothpaste type tube of Nutrition and Calories and will give a weak puppy, and dogs the sugars, nutrition and calories they need. It is a very good, miracle pick me up paste.

Kennel Cough
If your dog has been diagnosed with kennel cough, don’t panic! Kennel cough is a self-limiting disease, meaning it usually goes away on its own. If you find the symptoms of kennel cough to be quite bothersome to your dog, a teaspoon of Honey3 times a day can help ease the irritation in your dog’s throat.

Aside from relieving the symptoms of kennel cough, it is also important to strengthen your dog’s immune system. By doing this, your dog will be able to fight off infections more effectively and prevent the kennel cough from progressing into a more complicated form. Try giving your dog a daily dose of vitamin C. Approximately 500 mg for bigger dogs and 250 mg for smaller dogs can significantly boost your dog’s immunity.

Stop Puppy Chewing
To deter a puppy from chewing furniture legs, wipe the legs with a little clove oil. The puppy will stop chewing them. The furniture will stay safe and sound while the puppy learns to use something else.

Dog Urine Remover
If you have the time and patience, you can easily make your own dog urine cleaner. This method is not only good for removing the dog urine smell, but also for getting rid of dog urine stains. Mix 3 parts water to one part vinegar and saturate the spot. Next, blot the area. After it's dried, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Next, stir ¾ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide in with one tsp. of dish detergent, and drizzle over the baking soda. To make sure the hydrogen peroxide won't discolor your carpet, first try this concoction on a small, inconspicuous area. Next, use an old brush to work the baking soda in. Once it's dry, vacuum it up. If there's still a slight odor or a little bit of the stain left when done, repeat the process.
